If you see either of these birds anywhere in the wild get in touch with your nearest ornithologist. You could become famous, at least among bird watchers. The Pinkheaded Duck has not been seen since 1935 and the Mountain Quail was last seen in 1876. Both birds are thought to be extinct.
Another bird that was believed to be extinct but is now known to be still with us is the diminutive 20-centimetre high Blewitt's Owl. It had not been seen for 113 years and everybody thought it had gone the way of the dodo. But in November last year three American scientists who came to India to look for the bird, spotted and photographed a pair of the owlets in a wooded area near Mumbai.
This has raised hopes that the two other missing birds may also have survived.
